There is nothing more stressful than knowing that it is too hot outside for your pup and not having anything to do to fix it! Cue the Hurtta Cooling Vest!
This cooling vest is surprisingly effective, reasonably priced, and one way to make your outdoor experience this summer more comfortable for you and your pooch!
Heat exhaustion in dogs is a problem that affects dogs every summer season. It is a very serious condition that can be especially problematic in dogs with breathing issues (eg: brachycephalic breeds like pugs, Boston terriers, bulldogs). It also affects with laryngeal paralysis, overweight dogs, and young and old dogs that are not as well-equipped to thermoregulate (keep themselves cool).
Symptoms of Heat Exhaustion in Dogs
Heat exhaustion is very dangerous too because it can seem to "sneak up" on you and your pet. A few warning signs to look for with heat exhaustion would be:
- Excessive panting
- Bright red tongue
How the Hurtta Cooling Vest Helps Prevent Heat Exhaustion
Hurtta has designed this vest to keep your dog's vital organs cool, which is more coverage than a lot of other products on the market. Hurtta uses a material that is twice as absorbent as other terry cloth products with similar claims. It does dry out relatively quickly if it's very hot, so reapplication of water is very important.
You can soak it in water before putting it on, reapply water while your dog is wearing it, and you can even wet it and place it in the freezer for extra cooling effects on those sweltering days!
It's great for active dogs that can't be held back by rising temperatures and is ideal for training sessions, walks during the day, dog trials, hiking, and more! It can also be useful for older dogs that become less heat tolerant as they age. This vest has helped a lot of my geriatric patients with the difficult summer months. It was also very helpful for our own dog, Chewy.
Chewy modelling his cooling vest :)
One of the only difficulties that we experienced with this product was with Chewy; as an elderly dog, it can be a little difficult to put the vest on because it is a "step-in" vest. But it is not impossible!
We sometimes put it on partially while he was laying down and then zip it up once he was standing. This might be something to consider when purchasing this product for an older, larger breed dog.
We used this vest on Bentley in June and it helped tremendously! When it would dry out, we would pour more water over it and he would be cooled off for more play time!
